Chinese Brutalism Today' is divided into three chapters and ends with a methodological afterword that explains the reasons why the research was carried out and the scientific tools used. The first chapter is "Exposed concrete in the design process," the second is "Identity Research: Towards an Ornate Surface" and the third is "Global ambition: towards a polished surface." The narration takes place through a substantial written part accompanied by specific images that facilitate the understanding of the text. Transversally, in the narrative, an interpretation is given to the precise and ambiguous dictates announced in 2017 by President Xi Jinping: to pursue a contemporary architecture made of "international standards with Chinese characteristics."

Gênes, 14 août 2018, 11h36 : le pylône no. 9 d'un des plus imposants viaducs autoroutiers d'Europe s'effondre, entraînant véhicules et victimes. L'événement rarissime suscite stupéfaction et interrogations. Comment un tel ouvrage, même spectaculaire, a-t-il pu rompre alors qu'il était en usage depuis plus de cinquante ans ? Conçu dans les années soixante par l'ingénieur Riccardo Morandi figure majeure de l'ingénierie italienne avec Pier Luigi Nervi, le viaduc sur la Polcevera avait été unanimement salué lors de son inauguration comme un chef-d'œuvre. Fragment du vaste maillage autoroutier moderne point de suture paysager et performance de génie civil, à la fois structure et sculpture... le pont, objet si commun, si courant, est pourtant d'une complexité subtile et exigeante, à la croisée de deux impératifs servir et tenir. L'auteur de cet essai s'intéresse à la figure du pont et donne ici quelques clés de compréhension pour tenter d'expliquer la catastrophe. Riccardo Morandi, grand artisan du béton armé précontraint, sert de fil rouge à cette autopsie qui aborde notamment le thème du risque dans les grandes réalisations humaines, comme un plaidoyer pour la reconnaissance d'une production ouvrière originale, dont l'intrication territoriale, économique, technique rend la lecture complexe.
